Fall weekend at the cabin

We headed up north this past weekend to enjoy some family time at the cabin and also to enjoy the beautiful fall colors. The first order of business for the kids was to take a ride in the "green vehicle". Jordan is a good sport and drives really slow when Maya rides with him. : )

And a good amount of time on Friday was spent digging in the sand. Since I always have some sort of ailment when I go to the cabin, I was not surprised to find that I had come down with a migraine, so I spent most of Friday in bed, with the shades drawn and a pillow over my head. Nate was able to get some pictures of the kids while I was recovering.

Friday afternoon my headache had subsided enough for me to join Grandma Lu, Grandpa Bill and Jordan for a fire down by the lake. And what's a fire without marshmallows to roast?

Aren't the colors just beautiful? This is the shoreline right across from my parents dock.
Jordan and I cruised around on the golf cart for a little while. It was cold though - 30's and 40's with wind. Thankfully I remembered to pack the hats and gloves.

And speaking of packing....when we left Shawano Friday morning, Nate handled all the packing up since I had a headache. When we got to the cabin, he discovered that he had forgotten the kids suitcases! Thankfully Mike and Kari were coming up later than night so they could bring them, but we had to do without them till about 10 PM. So of course since we were in that comprimised situation, you know something tragic had to happen. During Maya's nap, her diaper leaked and she ended up with a very dirty mess all over her shirt and pants. After a bath, we had nothing but her jacket and one of Jordan's huge pull-ups for her to wear so she sported a very interesting outfit until we could wash and dry her other outfit. Here she is bouncing on the blow-up mattress downstairs with her wet hair and crazy outfit.

Saturday morning my parents let us sleep in - thank you! They got the kids dressed and fed them breakfast. And then when I got up...

...I looked out the window and saw this. Snow! Ahhh!!! I had planned on doing some family pictures with the beautiful fall backdrop and suddenly was sabotaged by a wintery blast. The actual snowfall didn't last too long but it did stay cold and windy for the rest of the day. It was a little challenging to get our family pictures - we were all cold, hair was blowing all over the place -just not the best conditions for pictures.

But it's pretty hard for the scenery up there not to look good so we did end up getting some great shots. I will probably use them for our Christmas cards so stay tuned. Here is just a cropped portion of one of them - I love Maya's smile. : )

Grandpa Bill and Maya taking one of their long walks.

Grandma Lu and Jordan doing some play-dough.

There is a mother deer and her two fawns that have been coming to the feeder since early spring. Last time we were up at the cabin they still had their spots but they have since disappeared. It's kind of cool to see them grow!

Grandma Lu got the kids some Halloween masks. Here they are trying to scare the picture taker - Maya told me she is a "Spooky Princess".

Overall, it was a great weekend. In addition to Mike and Kari, my brother Matt was able to come up for Friday night so that was a nice surprise - it's always great to have the whole family up there. We were also able to visit with my cousin Tim and his family - they were staying my grandparents other cabin - so it great to see them too (even if it was for only a little bit - stupid headache). And as always, seeing my grandparents was very nice. Their home is so welcoming and as soon as I step in the door, I immediately feel relaxed. Grandma is always ready with something to drink and a snack and Grandpa has a billion and one jokes or stories to entertain us with. I wish we could get up there more often. : )
